Buy Nothing Day

Tomorrow is Buy Nothing Day (it’s today in the USA).

Buy Nothing Day is a campaign spearheaded by Adbusters, and it is a challenge to spend one day not buying anything. Adbusters is a BC-based magazine that challenges the comfortable understandings of the world and invites to reconsider how we live our lives.

As the Buy Nothing Day Wikipedia page makes clear, for this one day, we’re encouraged to do anything other than shop: stay home with your family. Go for a hike. Read a book. Surf the internet. Go push an empty cart around a store with some friends (check out pictures on their website). For just one day, don’t buy anything. You never know what might happen…

And if you’re still curious, there’s an interesting article about Buy Nothing Day and Adbusters (and their role in the Occupy movement) in the Independent.
